Adjusting the bag in my hand, I slide the key into the lock and swing the door open.

“Lissa,” I call out, hoping she’s home. I saw her car parked outside, but for all I know she could still be at Adam’s.

“Brea!” she shouts, as she comes barreling down the hall. As soon as she rounds the corner, her arms fly out ready to hug me. “I’m so glad you’re here. You’re home!”

I stand here with two bags slung over my shoulder and a duffel bag in my hand, not feeling nearly as enthused as she is. This whole day has been emotionally draining.

“Sorry, here! Let me help you,” she says, racing over to take the duffel from my hand. It’s been awhile since I’ve made the trek up the two flights of stairs to our third-floor apartment. I feel myself a little out of shape already as my chest heaves with every winded breath.

“How was the drive?”

“Not as quick as I would’ve hoped,” I mumble, slipping my shoes off near the door. Standing in front of our rocker recliner, I fall back on the seat with a huff. The air conditioner is on full blast, all thanks to my amazing roommate who appreciates the feel of bought air.

“Why’s that?” Lissa asks, rounding the couch, sitting on the end with her chin perched on her fist.

“I met with my dad for lunch before I left,” I say, leaving that little fact in the air. Lissa and I talked several times while I was away so she’s aware I hadn’t spoken to my dad while I was gone.

“How’d it go?”

“I’m just glad it’s over. I’m surprised Adam’s not here with you,” I mention, changing the subject. When I talked to her earlier, she mentioned he might join us, but now looking I realize he isn’t here.

She doesn’t say anything, looking down at the throw pillow on the couch. She rubs her finger along the silk edge, and I can tell something is bothering her.

“Everything okay, Lis?”

“Yeah, everything’s great.” She looks up at me with a sad smile. “We are just starting different parts of our life, and I feel like we are moving in two different directions now. Adam graduated and he got a new job where he’s already been promoted. Here I am getting ready to start my senior year. Things just feel…different.”

“It’s just a lot of new things happening at once. I’m sure you will both get settled into your new normal again soon.”

I watch as Lissa nods her head agreeing, but I can tell she still isn’t too sure.

“Have you talked to Mason today?” she asks.

“I texted him to let him know I was almost here but that was about an hour ago. He should be here with Graham in a few minutes. They are going to help me unload the stuff I brought from home.”

As if on cue, two knocks on the door sound as Mason and Graham come walking through the door.

“Yes, sure! Just come right on in,” Lissa grumbles, clearly annoyed how Mason just waltzed in unannounced.
